Sandhurst & District Corps of Drums
like to take this opportunity to give you some information on what we are all
about. In May 2005 the Corps of Drums was formed by Mark Saunders to give the
children and young people of Sandhurst and the
surrounding areas an opportunity to take part in a different type of activity.
Our main aim is to build the confidence of our members by way of performance.
No musical knowledge is required as we teach all the basics needed to take
part. We are based at the 2nd Sandhurst Scout hall which is directly
opposite Waitrose on the Yorktown
Road, College
Town and we meet on a
Monday evening between 7 – 9pm to practice for the many events we take part in.
Our main band is aimed at children and young people
aged between 10 -18 years of age; however we see a great opportunity to recruit
younger children so we have decided to start a training band for 7-9 year olds
which will be an introductory to the Corps of Drums. This new group will be
also held at the 2nd Sandhurst Scout hall on Friday evenings between
6.30-7.45pm starting on Friday 6th August.
To date we have had another very busy year with many
performances at fetes and carnivals and also our attendance at this year’s
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Heritage day which was a complete success. We
still have various events booked going out to the end of the year and we have
already taken bookings for 2011.
During July, we took part in the Olympic Open Weekend.
This is part of the British Youth Marching Band Federation initiative to try
and get 2,012 youth marching band members playing at the same time so they can
have a strong case for the British Olympic Committee to allow a mass youth
marching band to take part in the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Fingers crossed we can be part of that.
