DUNKIRK RESCUE

TV news has carried items this weekend on the flotilla of little ships re-enacting the Dunkirk rescue. I remember coming home from school one day in May 1940 to see a row of wet khaki uniform hanging on the line. My father (who with Cedric Hardwicke the actor was the last man to leave France in WWI and as a member of Lord Gorts staff the first to enter in WWII) had returned from the rescue, having shot his way from Arras to the coast, getting on a ship which was shelled and then swimming to another vessel with despatches in his mouth and a large General clinging to his back! This event was marked by a medal and a certificate signed by the Mayor of Dunkirk. My father did not speak of his experiences, but for ever after had a hatred of the sea. Do you know of a Dunkirk veteran?

My late Grandad was rescued from Dunkirk - but he also never talked about it. He lived by the sea so I don't think it affected him that way though.
