and Knoll Road Car Parks are going to be modernised. Plans are in place to refurbish and improve
both car parks in Camberley town centre.
Last week Surrey Heath Borough Council agreed to go ahead with
improvement work that will make them easier and safer for people to use.
The Main Square Car Park will have new lighting that will
provide better quality light for drivers and pedestrians. The lights will also be more efficient and
lead to reduced energy bills! CCTV will
also be installed to boost security for car park users and also help to prevent
vandalism to the car park and anti social behaviour. The main stairway will
also have a “makeover” with repainted walls, repaired windows, doors and
handrails. The improvements are hoped to
be finished by November 2010.
Councillor Chris Rowbotham, who has responsibility for the
Build Environment, said “We want visitors to have good facilities for car
parking and these enhancements will improve the car parks for drivers and
pedestrians.
“By upgrading the existing lighting system, the resulting reductions to the
electricity consumption will enable the council to reduce its carbon footprint,
as well as reduce costs.”
Plans will be produced for both car parks to ensure that
improvement work and maintenance will be undertaken to extend the life of both
car parks. A further report on
additional proposed improvement to the car parks identified in the plans will
be presented to the Council’s Executive in August 2010.
Comments
What utter rubbish this is! The so called improvements are entirely cosmetic whereas the real fundamental problems of dangerous elevators constantly breaking down, getting stuck and their woeful state of repair have not been addressed at all. The Cambelery Car Park Elevator are very old and potential death traps. In the last month alone the lifts have broken down at least 9 times with customers getting trapped inside. One gentleman suffered a panic attack and a young mother was trapped with her toddler for more than 20 minutes as no- one responded to her frantic calls to the Car Park office for over 15 minutes. How the Council can claim the Car Park has been totally overhauled is incomprehensible. It really is scandalous that time and time again the Council has done nothing to improve the safely and function of the elevators.
