Is it true that our council is trying to force buy some of the buildings facing London Road and the highstreet corner, with the intent to "re-develop it" = demolishing some of the few old remains of the original High Street while wanting to replace it with another "Atrium" sort of structure?

Yesterday I discoveréd there is a running petition held at the Old Thai House in an attempt to request for the building to became listed and as such avoid the council idea of demolishing it. If these council plans are indeed true I would advise you guys to go down into the Old Thai House (the lovely building that looks a bit Tudor-like) and sign it...it won´t take too much of your time and youcan make a difference.

I hadn't heard about the petition to get the Old Thai House building listed. Thank you for posting. I found this page on the internet that shows the proposed development. It is part of the Camberley Town Centre Area Action Plan. http://tinyurl.com/3kxl95x

A recommendation for the Old Thai House was the first comment I made on joining this site tho' it seems to have disappeared (but there are many things that surprise me about this site!) so I would be very sorry to see the Old Thai House compelled to relocate. We were in Thailand this year and stayed in world class hotels like The Mandarin Oriental in Bangkok and Mom Tri's Villa Royale in ****et. Thai food is my favourite and we were back at the Old Thai House within a week of our return from Thailand as it is as good as anything we have experienced out there or back home. I also know from speaking to members of the family at the restaurant that some aspects of the interior structure are original artefacts imported from Thailand so have intrinsic value worthy of preservation.

I'll be down there this week to sign the petition although I must say that most of the rest of the establishments along the same strip are an eyesore so hope that the best can be salvaged whilst recognising that progress needs to be made.

Ironic when we have a conservation area just a few hundred yards down the road......

Pity it's just the Old Thai House that they want to List, I like the old Halifax building on the corner & the other Victorian buildings, but then this is a council that allowed lovely curved float glass frontage just a short way down the road be replaced by boring 'replacement' frontage.

Can we read the history of Camberley from it's buildings??? NO sadly:-((

We have plenty of empty shops at the mo, do we need more?? Interestingly this sort of things was being discussed on Jeremy Vine R2 at lunchtime today.....general consensus, I understand, was we do not need more retail units, but to encourage the ones we do have.
