The meeting was opened by Councillor Moira Gibson, the Leader of the Council who introduced the first speakers, The Army Presentation Group from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. This presentation gave delegates an insight into the Army's role in NATO and Peace-time Operations; the Army's legal obligations, and how taxpayers' money is spent in areas such as recruiting, training, and rehabilitation.
This was followed by keynote speaker Rt Hon Michael Gove, Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath and Secretary of State for Education. Mr Gove told the audience he was delighted to be presenting alongside the Army team and said: "We are very lucky to have such strong military links in Surrey Heath, with Deepcut, Sandhurst and Mytchett being on our doorstep."
Mr Gove also spoke of his pride at how Surrey Heath has coped in the recession and said: "Despite the tough economic climate the borough is at the cutting edge of innovation."
He concluded by highlighting that he would like to try and influence the Government to provide more support to Surrey Heath's head teachers and principals and increase the number of apprenticeships.
Cllr Moira Gibson said: "This event is well cemented in local businesses calendars and because of the high turnout we continue to keep running it. Furthermore it's a great way for existing and new businesses in Surrey Heath to network, share ideas and contacts."
The next Surrey Heath Business Breakfast will be held in February 2012. Businesses interested in attending, exhibiting or speaking at it should visit: www.surreyheath.gov.uk/business
